Cobh junior footballers
Cobh junior footballers had a useful friendly game against Lisgoold in Pairc Ui Chonaill this Thursday evening.
It ended up a comfortable 4-10 to 0-9 victory for Cobh but the game was competitive throughout.
Both teams fielded without some players, and Cobh were short 8 from the team that started the East Cork quarter final, so it was a real opportunity for many players to stake a claim for a starting place. First half was full of activity and opportunity, but short on scores, which were evenly shared. Four Cobh Points (C. Spriggs x 3, K Preston 1) were offset by four Lisgoold points. As half time approached another Lisgoold point briefly gave them the lead before a Cian Spriggs goal put us two points up at the break. Second half started brightly for Cobh. An Allen Walley point followed by two Cian Spriggs points opened a five point gap, but Lisgoold got two points in response to narrow the gap back to just one goal. At 45 minutes Odhran Kidney-Power goaled, and Cian Spriggs pointed shortly afterwards, to create a significant 7 point gap with less than 15 mins to go. Both sides got 2 points each over the next 10 mins (C Spriggs, O Kidney Power) as Lisgoold pressed forward to try and recover the game. During the final 5 minutes Lisgoold continued to press forward, but Cobh backs managed the pressure, and Cobh’s pace on the counter attack led to goals from Kevin McSweeney, and O Kidney-Power. It ended up a comfortable 4-10 to 0-9 victory for Cobh. Overall the game was competitive throughout. Lots of lessons, opportunities, and room for improvement, and it was great preparation for our forthcoming East Cork semi-final.
We will have another home Junior Football game v Kinsale in Cobh on next Tuesday night at 7:30. The Kinsale game will be our second in the County league, with three more county league games during August and September. All support welcome, as we aim to build on the momentum we have now gathered from 4 football wins in a row, Youghal – Midleton - Glanmire, and now Lisgoold.
