Junior footballers win
Junior footballers recorded a comfortable win in their final East league match in Cobh on Wednesday night. Overall it was a lively and entertaining display. As it was midweek we were fielding without some players, and we had agreed that all large panel of players were all to get good game time. This match was mainly a last run out before our East championship game with Glanmire this Saturday.
Final Score Cobh 5-9 : Midleton 1-8.
First 20 minutes were dominated by Cobh, but we were wasteful in attack. Two early Cobh points from play (Cian Spriggs, Eoin Hastings) were cancelled by two Midleton points, and we really should have been well ahead after this period. For the final 10 minutes of the half the Cobh pressure finally bore fruit. On the 20th minute Sean Hilliard tapped in, to raise a green flag. Within five minutes Connor Farrell grabbed two points followed by Cobh’s second goal. Two more points (Sean Hilliard and Conor Farrell) were answered by two Midleton points which brought the half time score to Cobh 2-6 Midleton 0-4, which more fairly reflected the balance of play.
Midleton started the second half in style with a well taken goal, followed by a point to close the gap to just four points, and they threatened to recover, but from here on Cobh again upped the pace. Three Cobh’s points from Mark Foley, Conor Farrell, and Sean Hilliard were answered by a single Midleton point to create a six-point gap with 10 minutes to go. Keith Donachie finished off a sweeping move with a good goal to end the game as a real contest. In an unstructured final 10-minutes, Odhran Kidney Power added another goal, Cobh keeper Michael McCaul Walsh saved a penalty at our end (even though Midleton were given two go’s) and finally Eddy Walsh converted a Cobh penalty to bring the final score to Cobh 5-9, Midleton 1-9.
Overall a very good pre-championship run out for the team, and an important result to go with it.
