Cobh Juniors footballers
Cobh Juniors footballers progressed in their third round of the County Football Championship with a mostly comfortable 9-point victory over Glengarriff in Ballincollig on Friday evening.
Final Score Cobh 2-13 (19), Glengarriff 1-7 (10).
Cobh dominated for two 10 minute spells during the game and this was to be the difference between the sides. Those 20 minutes displayed the potential in this team, and it was particularly pleasing that 9 different players got on the score sheet. Next up in the county quarter final are the winners of Grange and Randal Og who play on Saturday next weekend
Cobh dominated the first 10 minutes with Cian Spriggs scoring 1-1 within the first three minutes. Glengarriff moved their corner forward to the half back line in an effort to calm the storm, but Cobh corner back Pa Carey followed him, and found the space to score a fine point from corner back on his championship football debut, further adding to the pressure on Glengarriff. Following another Spriggs point from play, Conor Farrell found the net for Cobh’s second goal. 8 minutes in and Cobh led 2-3 to a single Glengarriff point. Glengarriff settled after this, and began to create chances, but many of these were from difficult angles and under pressure from the Cobh backs. We had 6 wides in a row from Glengarriff before they managed to close the gap with two pointed frees. 25 minutes in, and Glengarriff scored their second point from play. This was quickly followed by a Glengarriff goal and the Cobh advantage was down to just two points. A Karl Preston point steadied Cobh nerves, and Cian Spriggs converted a free to leave the half time score Cobh 2-5 Glengarriff 1-4.
First half Keeper Mark Foley moved to corner forward, with Conor Farrell going to goal, and Mark had an early impact in the second half. First 10 minutes of the second half were even with a Mark Foley pointed free match by a Glengarriff point. At this stage, the Cobh team again found some real form and we were treated to an accurate procession of Cobh points over the middle 10 minutes of the second half. 2 more points from Mark Foley, were followed by points from Martin O’Connor, Kieran Histon, Darragh O’Keeffe and Cian Spriggs which created a 10-point gap, with just 10 minutes left. In the final 10 minutes Glengarriff scored two points with a Cobh response from the always running Jack Ronan. A last-minute penalty save by Conor Farrell maintained the nine-point lead for Cobh until the final whistle. Final Score Cobh 2-13 (19), Glengarriff 1-7 (10).
